Preparing for a family law consultation

You do not need every answer before meeting with a family law attorney. The first conversation is an opportunity to explain the situation, identify concerns and discuss what information is needed next.

Bring relevant paperwork

  • Every page of court papers you have received
  • Existing custody orders or separation agreements
  • Letters from another attorney
  • Relevant pay records, tax returns and account statements
  • Information about property, debt, retirement accounts and insurance

Explain the children’s routines

If children are involved, bring information about their current schedule, school, childcare, medical needs and activities. Be ready to explain how parenting responsibilities are currently shared and any immediate concerns.

Organize the history

A short timeline can help your attorney understand the sequence of events. Bring relevant communications, such as emails or parenting-app messages, and ask how the office would like to receive them. Share complete information, including facts that may be difficult to discuss.

Questions to ask

  1. What are the most important issues in my situation?
  2. Are there immediate steps I should take or avoid?
  3. What documents or information do you still need?
  4. What are the next stages of the local court process?
  5. What should I expect if custody is involved?
  6. How will financial and support concerns be evaluated?
  7. What mistakes should I be careful to avoid?
  8. Could negotiation or mediation be appropriate?
  9. What might affect the timeline?
  10. How will the office communicate with me?
