Scales and a gavel

Choosing a lawyer begins with understanding the issue you need help with. A family dispute, injury claim and criminal charge can call for different experience and different kinds of preparation.

Identify the area of law

Describe the problem, any court papers you have received and the decisions you need to make. Ask whether the lawyer regularly handles that kind of matter. A general search result is not a substitute for that conversation.

Ask about relevant experience

Discuss the attorney’s work on similar issues and how the case might be approached. References or published reviews may help you understand someone’s experience with the office, but another person’s result cannot predict yours.

Set expectations for communication

Find out who your main contact will be, how you will receive updates and what information the office will need from you. You should be comfortable asking questions and requesting plain-language explanations.

Take time to consider both the attorney’s relevant work and whether the working relationship is a good fit. Explore our practice areas or contact the firm to discuss your needs.
